orientation to work, is as old as the <span style=\"color: #84c029;\">history of humankind<\/span>.\u00a0 Career emerged from livelihood just around the 18th century.\u00a0 Even today, a much <span style=\"color: #84c029;\">larger proportion<\/span> of human beings are engaged with livelihoods when compared to careerists.\u00a0 As seen in the pictures above, livelihood orientations to work bring the worker into <span style=\"color: #84c029;\">direct contact<\/span> with work tasks.\u00a0 The livelihood approach seems to foster a sense of belonging, of being enfolded by the community&#8230;.of greater <span style=\"color: #84c029;\">wellbeing<\/span>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Livelihood is a central concept in the Jiva system and Jiva believes that the careerist can learn much from livelihood orientations to work.\u00a0 This page describes how Jiva <span style=\"color: #84c029;\">blends<\/span> livelihood thinking with career development.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section Career<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p>Over the recent past, the notions of career and livelihood have been increasingly juxtaposed.\u00a0 Common beliefs about these fundamental human activities are that livelihood is related to <span style=\"color: #84c029;\">survival needs<\/span> and largely practised by those who are in lower income brackets such as farmers, vendors, artisans and skilled workers, and mainly in rural areas.\u00a0 Career on the hand is seen as something more linked to urban contexts, to middle and higher social classes, with greater potential for <span style=\"color: #84c029;\">better opportunities and higher incomes<\/span>.\u00a0 Formal academic (school and college) education is viewed as concomitant to career, while traditional, <span style=\"color: #84c029;\">non-formal<\/span> forms of skills transmission are linked to livelihood.\u00a0 Career carries stronger connotations of<span style=\"color: #84c029;\"> prestige<\/span> than livelihood.\u00a0 Indeed, the drive to abandon rural livelihoods and move toward a \u201cbetter future\u201d in the city is a rapidly growing one.<\/p><p>The livelihood planning approach makes the point that while the notion of career is becoming increasingly widespread, it must be<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column #84c029;\">individual<\/span> discover in which occupational area (e.g., commercial art or law) he\/she should specialise.\u00a0 In another, career guidance may be to help a <span style=\"color: #84c029;\">community<\/span> identify and gain modern skills to manage their traditional, rural occupations in a viable manner.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3df8fff\" data-id=\"3df8fff\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap Guidance<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p>What is the role of <span style=\"color: #84c029;\">contemporary career<\/span> guidance?\u00a0 Would career guidance be relevant to the farmer, the cobbler, the silk worm producer, the weaver, the traditional toy maker, the basket maker, the potter, the fisherman, the traditional healer and the shepherd?\u00a0 Or to their children?\u00a0 Such questions have a bearing on the contemporary practice of career guidance.\u00a0 Should career guidance be offered at all to the practitioners of traditional occupations, and more importantly to their children?\u00a0 Does career guidance become relevant only when economic development is such that non traditional, non livelihood oriented occupations begin to appear within that economy?\u00a0 Is career guidance a replacement for traditional mechanisms of occupational role allocation?\u00a0 Finally, does career guidance in these contexts imply replacing livelihood with career?\u00a0 It is here that the notion of <span style=\"color: #84c029;\"><em>livelihood planning<\/em><\/span> and a livelihood planning approach to career guidance could be discussed
