A good test will provide norms to <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">interpret<\/span> a student&#8217;s performance.<\/li><li>The term \u201cnorm\u201d is short for normative. Norms are a <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">statistical framework<\/span> based on performance of a large number of students (called a normative sample) on the test.\u00a0<\/li><li>Norms make it possible to determine where an individual stands in <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">comparison<\/span> to his\/her peers.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/li><li>Test norms can only be developed for tests that are <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">standardized<\/span>.\u00a0 To be effective, tests should be administered in a \u201cstandardised\u201d manner: testing conditions, test instructions, scoring and interpretation are expected to be uniform across test-takers and testing environments.<\/li><li>Finally, having norms is important, but not sufficient.\u00a0 A test is useful only if it has norms that #fc8502;\">describing<\/span> rather than measuring or quantifying.\u00a0 The counsellor <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">dialogues<\/span> with the client and talks to him or her to gain deeper insights into the person&#8217;s interests and aptitudes.\u00a0 Qualitative data therefore is <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">verbal<\/span> data.\u00a0 This data is analysed to look for <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">patterns<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">trends<\/span> in the person&#8217;s orientations.\u00a0 The qualitative observer would not say, Linguistic aptitude = 23\/40 but would describe the aptitude in terms of the person\u2019s fluency with words, sensitivity to shades of meanings and so on.\u00a0 Therefore in the qualitative approach, there are <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">no tests, no right or wrong answers, no scores or norms<\/span>.\u00a0 It is through an intense verbal interaction and through asking the right questions, that the counsellor style=\"color: #84c029;\">Usefulness and Limitations<\/span><\/p><ul><li>Qualitative methods allow matters to be considered in <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">detail<\/span> and in <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">depth<\/span>.\u00a0 Through a good interview the counsellor can go back in client&#8217;s history and gain rich information.<\/li><li>Since interactions between the counsellor and client are not limited to a set of standardised questions, the <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">direction<\/span> of an interview can be guided and thereby the interviews are <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">more responsive<\/span> to the client.\u00a0<\/li><li>On the other hand, the quality of the data obtained <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">relies<\/span> heavily on the Information collected using one method is <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">verified<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">validated<\/span> against information collected using the other method.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #232c69;\">A mixed methods approach to assessment is not simply about collecting both quantitative and qualitative data, but using these in <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">tandem<\/span> to collect more comprehensive information as compared collecting information using just <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">one<\/span> of the approaches. Quantitative data (e.g., test data) is <span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">cross-referenced<\/span> with the quantitative data (e.g., interview with the student) to build a multidimensional database of
