which influence career development.\u00a0 They are attitudes, mindsets and opinions that <span style=\"color: #84c029;\">underlie<\/span> people\u2019s idea of a career.\u00a0 These patterns of beliefs maybe not just be limited to a single individual.\u00a0 They maybe embedded in the <span style=\"color: #84c029;\">community as a whole<\/span> and transmitted to the young in that community through a process of social learning. \u00a0The slides give examples of common career beliefs.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section Beliefs<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p>Career beliefs could colour the manner in which a career aspirant deals with career development tasks.\u00a0 Some examples of common career beliefs are: \u201cBoys are better at mathematics and science than girls\u201d, or \u201cImmigrants cannot accept the work ethic of the host country job market\u201d.\u00a0 The impact of career beliefs on the career development process can be marked and critical.\u00a0 The effectiveness of career counselling can crumble if prevailing career beliefs are left unaddressed.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong><span style=\"color: #84c029;\">Types of Career Beliefs <\/span><\/strong><\/p><p>Our research has indicated that there are various types of career beliefs.\u00a0 Some of them are:<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">Proficiency Beliefs<\/span>:\u00a0 These beliefs describe the willingness to submit to the rigors of a formal training programme and spend resources (time, effort and finances) to achieve the distinction of being formally qualified as per the norms of a given educational system.\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">Control and Self Direction Beliefs<\/span>:\u00a0 Situations and experiences influence the direction that one\u2019s life can take.\u00a0 These beliefs reflect the individual\u2019s sense of control over his or her life situation and the orientation to directing his or her life.\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">Common Practice<\/span>:\u00a0 Unwritten norms shape the career preparation behaviour of a community in a certain way.\u00a0\u00a0 These are group expectations of \u201ccorrect\u201d behaviour.\u00a0 The individual may find it hard to go against these expectations.\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">Persistence Beliefs<\/span>:\u00a0 Successful career development requires the individual to face and attempt to overcome difficulties and hurdles that punctuate progress toward a career goal.\u00a0 The content of these beliefs reflect the determination to work toward future career goals in spite of the barriers encountered during the process of career preparation.\u00a0 Individuals with low persistence beliefs may give up a career development target easily.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #fc8502;\">Fatalism<\/span>:\u00a0 The content of these beliefs portray a sense of resignation and a passive acceptance of one\u2019s life situation.\u00a0 Fatalistic beliefs are coloured by the feeling of pessimism, a sense that nothing can be changed and that matters are pre-ordained by more powerful forces.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element style=\"color: #fc8502;\">powerful impact<\/span> on career development.\u00a0 A student with a high potential for design, for example, might be discarding careers such as commercial art or graphic design because her friends believe that there is no future in such careers.
